Open inventory using a pump
Open inventory using a pump as part of inventory and pump management in myAvatar Addiction Management.
Prerequisite:
- Before opening inventory, make sure the pump is powered on, has been properly set up (there is a green light next to the unit that will use the pump) and that no inventory is currently open at that unit (it should display 'No Inventory').
- Go to: Avatar PM > Avatar AM Options > Inventory and Pump Management.
- Choose the appropriate Unit # from the toolbar.
- In the dropdown menu select Pump and select Open Inventory.
- Select Cancel if you do not want to open inventory at this unit.
- Select the inventory unit (bottle) to open.
Note: An inventory unit should be used until it is no longer available, and it should always be used on the same workstation/pump. - Verify the amount of medication contained in the bottle that is being opened. The balance that displays here is the balance that the myAvatar AM system thinks is in the bottle.
- If this balance is correct, select Yes. This opens the inventory for dispensing.
OR - If the balance shown is incorrect, select No. This indicates that the balance must be adjusted before it can be used for dispensing.
- If this balance is correct, select Yes. This opens the inventory for dispensing.
- Next, perform the prompted steps to prepare the bottle for dispensing:
- Select Yes to continue to open the bottle and prime the pump.
Note: Do not select 'Yes' until a catch cup has been placed under the pump’s dispensing nozzle, as the pump will activate and eject medication. - Select No to skip the pump priming process. If 'No' is selected, the bottle is opened without priming the pump.
Notes:- Generally, it is not recommended to open inventory without priming the pump unless you are changing bottles in the middle of dispensing and the pump lines were not emptied when the previous bottle was closed.
- If the 'Require Prime When Opening Inventory' option is activated, the option to skip the prime is not provided. 'No' will be the default and will be chosen. Select Yes to clear this message and prime the pump.
- Select Yes to continue to open the bottle and prime the pump.
- If the pump was properly primed, medication is dispensed into the cup. Select Yes to confirm that medication was ejected; if medication was not ejected, select No to repeat the pump priming process.
Note: Do not screw the bottle too tightly into the pump. If the bottle is screwed very tightly no medication is able to flow from the bottle into the pump lines; however, the pump will not detect this and will behave as if medication has been ejected. - Return the medication that was ejected into the catch cup during the pump priming process back into the bottle in the pump. This is very important for tracking inventory.
- Select OK once the medication has been returned to the bottle to continue.
Note: Be careful when returning the priming dose to not lift the tube too far from the bottle or to jostle the bottle or liquid; this may cause bubbles and/or air in the pump lines.
At this point, the inventory is open and ready for dispensing. A small white cup symbol is visible next to the inventory unit on the Inventory and Pump Management screen or the Dispensing screen, and the medication type/inventory bottle number displays, along with the current balance.
