Calibrate a pump
Calibrate a pump as part of inventory and pump management in myAvatar Addiction Management.
A pump should be calibrated frequently to ensure the accuracy of dosing and inventory tracking. The calibration process is accessed via the Inventory and Pump Management screen or the Dispensing screen. Water is usually used to perform pump calibrations.
Note: Your organization may use registry settings that cause some of the messages described here to appear different in your system.
- Go to: Avatar PM > Avatar AM Options > Inventory and Pump Management.
- Choose the appropriate Unit # from the toolbar.
- In the dropdown menu select Pump and select Check Pump Calibration.
- Install a bottle and place a catch cup under the pump’s dispensing nozzle and select OK.
- Select OK in response to the 'OK to prime pump' message.
- Choose Yes to continue the calibration process.
- If water was not ejected into the catch cup, select No and you are prompted again with the 'OK to prime pump' message; select OK. This allows more fluid to enter the tubing and complete the prime.
Note: The default total amount of water used during the calibration test is 100 milligrams, and this is the suggested amount to be used for calibration. - Make a selection:
- Select OK to begin calibration.
OR - Select Cancel to cancel the pump calibration test and proceed to empty the pump lines of the water added during the priming process.
- Select OK to begin calibration.
- Enter the average amount of water (in milligrams) to be dispensed in each dose. The default and suggested amount here is 10 milligrams.
Note: The average amount to dispense cannot be greater than the total amount of water that is going to be pumped. - Make a selection:
- Select OK to continue the calibration.
OR - Choose Cancel to cancel the pump calibration test and proceed to empty the pump lines of the water added during the priming process.
- Select OK to continue the calibration.
- The entries made on the previous two messages are then summarized.
- Place a dry measuring flask (capable of holding the total specified fluid value to be pumped) under the pump’s dispensing nozzle.
- After the measuring flask is in place:
- Select OK to continue the calibration process and dispense the specified amounts of water.
OR - Choose Cancel to cancel the pump calibration test and proceed to empty the pump lines of the water added during the priming process.
- Select OK to continue the calibration process and dispense the specified amounts of water.
- When all of the 'doses' are completed, measure the amount of water that was pumped into the measuring flask and enter this measured amount (in milligrams) and:
- Select OK to continue with the calibration process.
OR - Choose Cancel to cancel the pump calibration test and proceed to empty the pump lines of the water added during the priming and pumping processes.
- Select OK to continue with the calibration process.
- Select Yes to save the calibration test results to the database. Saving test results to the database allows you to retrieve the results for future analysis; this is the recommended action. If you do not save the results, you are still able to print the results of this test.
- Next, the measured deviation for the pump is shown, and you have the option to print the test results:
- Select Yes to print the results; the report is sent directly to the workstation’s default printer without previewing first on the computer screen.
OR - Select No to bypass printing the results.
Note: If the calibration results are not saved to the database this will be the only opportunity to print a report of these results.
- Select Yes to print the results; the report is sent directly to the workstation’s default printer without previewing first on the computer screen.
- If you selected Yes to print the report, you have an opportunity to print an additional copy of the report.
- After printing the report, select Yes to conduct another calibration test, or select No to not conduct another test.
- When no more calibration tests are desired, you are prompted to empty the pump lines.
- Select OK to cause the pump to reverse and empty all the water from the line.
- When the pump finishes the reversal process, you are asked to verify that the lines have been cleared of water:
- Select Yes if there is no more water in the tubes.
OR - Select No if there is still water in the lines; you are prompted to empty the pump lines again.
- Select Yes if there is no more water in the tubes.
