Logical Observation Identifiers (LOINC) - PM

Add and edit the Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes.

  • LOINC codes are industry codes used to provide standard naming conventions to areas such as laboratory and test results. They are used for Meaningful Use reporting purposes via the ARRA Measures Reporting form.
  • Avatar is configured to include the complete set of codes from the LOINC 2.46 database.
  • The fields on this form can be populated through the Logical Observation Identifiers (LOINC) file type on the File Import form.
  1. Go to: Avatar PM > System Maintenance > System Definition
  2. In the Add New Or Edit Existing field:
  • Select Add to add a new LOINC code.
    • In the Code field, enter the LOINC code.
    • In the Long Common Name field, enter full descriptive title of the code.
  • Select Edit to change an existing LOINC code.
    • In the LOINC Code field, select the code to edit.
  1. In the Short Name field, enter the abbreviated code name.
  2. In the Reportable LOINC Code? field, select whether or not a code should be flagged for lab results reporting to public health agencies. This field defaults to the appropriate value from the Reportable Conditions Mapping guide published by the government, but can be changed.
  3. In the Date Last Changed field, select the date when this code was last edited.
  4. In the remaining fields enter or edit information as appropriate.
  5. In the HL7 Attachment Structure field, select whether or not the attachment is structured.
  6. Click Process Action to submit the code changes.
  7. Click Show Report For LOINC Codes to display a report on LOINC codes.
