STD clinic overview
This summary outlines the services provided for STD reporting and includes general information about fees and test results.
Services provided by clinics:
- Testing and treatment for most STDs
- Vaccines for hepatitis A and B
- HIV testing
- Conventional blood testing for HIV available at all clinics
- Rapid HIV Testing only available at Rosecrans and Central Region clinics
- Rapid HIV Test is done via oral swab or finger stick blood
- All testing is confidential (for example, the patient's name is recorded but protected by law)
- Anonymous testing is available and is conducted by County of San Diego staff, at The San Diego LGBT Center
All services are offered on the basis of:
- Risk assessments
- Physical examinations
- And/or laboratory test results.
Clinics do not perform or provide:
- HPV testing or vaccination
- asymptomatic herpes testing
- PAP smears
- birth control (other than condoms)
- treatment for general medicine/non-STD related issues
- HIV treatment or pregnancy care
Fees
- There is a $15 fee per visit which may be waived if unable to pay. The fee covers:
- Physical examination
- If necessary, lab tests, certain treatments, vaccinations, and any follow-up visits within 30 days
- Clinics do not accept insurance. Payment is by cash or check only. There is no fee for HIV testing only.
Test Results
- Some STD test results are available on the day of the visit.
- Results from rapid HIV tests are typically available in 20 minutes, during the visit.
- Most results are available one week after the visit.
- If any of the STD test results are positive, the staff will notify the patient of the result, usually by phone. If all results are negative, no call is made.
- The patient may return to the clinic where they were seen to obtain test results in person. The patient can also request that the staff call with STD test results.
- HIV blood test results are typically available in one week. By law, the clinic cannot give HIV results over the phone. The patient must return to the clinic to receive the results in person.
