Diet Orders in Avatar Order Entry

Create single diet orders that describe the client's diet, including any restrictions, supplements to be given, and indications of tube feeding when needed.

Diet restriction and diet supplement information displays on the following myAvatar Order Entry forms:

  • Client Profile / Physicians Orders
  • Physician Order Verification
  • Nursing Order Acknowledgement
  • Nursing Order Verification
  • Order Entry Forms Printing - Physician Order Form
  • Order Entry Notifications

Prerequisites:

In the Order Type dictionary use the Order Type Category extended attribute to define order types as 'Dietary - Oral' and 'Dietary - Tube Feeding'. These order types will be used for order codes that represent diet orders.

Add values for the following user-defined dictionaries:

  • Diet Restrictions - Define diet restrictions such as 'gluten-free', '1500 Calorie', etc. These dictionary values populate the Diet Restrictions drop-down in the Additional Order Details dialog (Client Profile / Physicians Orders - Create Order). Use the 'Cannot Be Combined with These Restrictions' extended attribute to specify restrictions that cannot be combined with the restriction that the user is currently defining or editing.
  • Diet Supplements - Defile diet supplements such as 'Ensure', 'Glucerna Shake', etc. These dictionary values populate the Diet Supplements drop-down in the Additional Order Details dialog (Client Profile / Physicians Orders - Create Order).
  • Meal Periods - Define meal periods such as 'Breakfast', 'Dinner', etc. at which supplements are to be given. These dictionary values populate the Meal Periods drop-down in the Additional Order Details dialog (Client Profile / Physicians Orders - Create Order). Enter a value for the 'Displayable Hour of Administration' extended attribute.
  • Order Types - Create a new Dietary - Oral order type. If the 'Allow Only One Active Order At a Time' extended attribute is set to 'Yes', the client is only able to have one active order with a type of 'Dietary - Oral' at one time.

On the Order Code Setup form, define order codes for oral diets and tube-feeding diets.

  • Order codes for oral diets - Assign an order type that has the Order Type Category extended attribute set to Dietary - Oral.
  • Order codes for tube-feeding diets - Assign an order type that has the Order Type Category extended attribute set to Dietary - Tube Feeding.

On the Order Entry User Definition or Order Entry User Role form, give the appropriate users access to diet order types.

  1. On the Client Profile / Physicians Orders form (Create Orders), in the Order Type field select either 'Dietary - Oral' or 'Dietary - Tube Feeding'. If there is already an active Dietary - Oral order for the client, a warning message displays. (This warning only occurs if the 'Allow Only One Active Order At a Time' extended attribute is set to 'Yes'.) If the new order is intended to replace the existing order, delete the existing order.
  2. Click Additional Order Details. This button will display only for order types that have the Order Type Category extended attribute defined as either ''Dietary - Oral' or 'Dietary - Tube Feeding'.
  3. In the Additional Order Details dialog, select diet restrictions.
  4. If items were entered for the 'Cannot Be Combined With These Restrictions' extended attribute (Diet Restrictions dictionary), warnings for these items will display. Click OK to deselect all values.
  5. Click New Row and enter supplement values in each cell. The Days of the Week and Meal Periods are required.
  6. Complete the remaining fields on the Client Profile / Physicians Orders (Create Order) form and file the order.
