Variable Dose Orders
Overview
Variable Dose support allows you to have a single submission pharmacy order with variable doses and variable frequencies.
Before You Begin
- Variable dose functionality is enabled through the Enable Variable Dose Support in the OE Console (Orders This Episode) registry setting.
- A RADplus middleware Update (1881-16-AV38131.jar) or upgrade is required to make use of this functionality.
Details
- Variable Dose orders will be supported only via the OE Console (not via the Client Profile / Physicians Orders form).
Usage
When variable dose support is enabled, a plus sign (+) icon will appear before the Dose and Dose Unit fields on the Orders This Episode section for pharmacy orders. Click this icon to add additional dosing schedule rows. This allows you to set up the order with multiple, varying dosage instructions.
For each row, select the Dose, Dose Unit, and the Freq: for the dosing. The Hours of Administration for each entry will default from the Frequency Code selected for that Variable Dose entry, but will be able to be customized by clicking the Custom button to launch the Administration Time window.
The Add. Instructions field will be disabled, and populated with the values selected in each dosage scheduling row. This field is printed on all OE product reports and forms that display order details, ensuring that the Variable Dose instructions are always presented.
To remove a row, click the red X beside it.

Administration Time
In this window, set up the schedule for administering the dosage.
- Under Selected Frequency, check the days of the week to include in this dosing schedule, or check Daily to include all days.
- Under Scheduled Administration Time, enter each of the Hours of Administration times that the dosage should be administered. Click Add time to include more fields for additional times. Values must be entered in one of the following formats:
- HH:MM PM
- HHMM military time (Midnight = 0000)
- Click Save.

Scratchpad
When a variable dose order has been added to the Scratchpad, the message "See additional instructions" will appear under the order description. This order is considered the "parent" variable dose order.

eMAR
When the order is received by eMAR, it will display one cell for each dosage scheduling row entry. These are considered the "child" variable dose orders.
The Order # line will display the order number - VarDose #.

If the "parent" order in OE is marked as on Hold, Resumed, Renewed, Validated, or Discontinued, the same will happen to each "child" order in eMAR.
If a "parent" order has three "child" orders and one of them is a One Time Only order, then that "child" order will be Discontinued upon administration. The "parent" order will still be active as well as the other two "child" variable dose orders.
When modifying a variable dose order, the original "parent" variable dose order will be Discontinued, which in turn will discontinue all "child" variable dose orders in eMAR. A new "parent" order will appear in the order grid and new "child" variable dose orders will appear in eMAR.
Acknowledgment
The Nursing Order Acknowledgement performed for the "parent" order in OE will cause acknowledgement of all of the associated "child" orders in eMAR, if the system is configured to pass OE Nursing Order Acknowledgements to eMAR.
Order Acknowledgement in eMAR is conveyed to OE Nursing Order Acknowledgement once all "child" orders in eMAR have been acknowledged in eMAR.
