Order Entry Console Overview

Order Entry Console

The Order Entry console consists of two widgets – the Order Entry widget and the recommended Client Information widget. Some of the principles included in the design of the Order Entry widget include:

  • Always provide context – both what has been ordered previously for the client as well as what is being considered for the specified episode.
  • Reduce visible fields to only those that are required for the order action (i.e. New, Discontinue) and/or Order Type (i.e. medication vs. lab order).
  • When possible, show options face up as buttons to reduce the need for clinicians to use extra mouse clicks to see available options.
  • Reduce interruptions by only requiring action on interaction alerts when signing orders.
    • Passive alerts will display in the Order Scratchpad that a physician could choose to review and override prior to signing, but they will not be interrupted until signing.
  • Allow physicians to take action on or sign multiple orders at once.

Setup

The OE Console is added to the system through a named update (an update that is not part of the regular product updates). To obtain this functionality, please contact your Netsmart representative.

  1. Upload the named update to your system through the Product Update and Customization Pack Installation form (CWS version).
  2. Using View Definition, create a new view, or select an existing view to set up with the OE widget.
  3. Select the Order Profile widget under the Misc. section of the Available column, and move it to the Assigned column.
  4. Drag the widget onto the Default Role Layout.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Using User Definition/User Role Definition, make sure that the appropriate Avatar users have access to the view with the OE widget.

Order Entry Widget

The Order Entry widget consists of two tabs - Orders This Episode, and Home Medications. A third tab, Reconciliation, will be added in the future.

The Orders This Episode and Home Medications tabs consist of three main areas: (1) Current Order Profile, (2) Order Details and (3) Order Scratchpad.

Functionality Currently Not Supported

Netsmart's intent for the Order Console was not to recreate 100% of the capabilities delivered in the existing Client Profile/Physician Orders form. Nor was the approach to deliver 100% of the planned functionality in the initial release. Our goal was an agile and iterative approach to the development which has impact on the functionality that is available at any given time.

Please review the list of capabilities below and ensure that your organization does not require any of the functionality below prior to implementing the console. If an item has been identified as planned, please contact your Netsmart representative to determine if it has been released

Updates to the Order Entry console are being released in an iterative approach and, as such, certain functionality that is currently available in the Client Profile/Physician Orders form is not available in the console. Please review the following list to ensure that your organization does not require any of the functionality below prior to implementing the Order Entry console.
