Controlled substance limitations
The following limitations and hard stops are built into myAvatar to support ePrescribing requirements as defined by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
- Class II medications do not allow for any refills.
- Class II medications require an earliest fill date when more than 1 active prescription is available for that exact product (for example, Ritalin 20 MG Oral Tablet). The earliest fill date cannot be earlier than 5 days from the end of the latest prescription. The earliest fill date will populate for clinicians.
- Within a single ordering session (for example, Scratchpad), a clinician cannot order more than a 90 day supply of a Class II medication.
- Class III and IV medications allows for a maximum of 5 refills.
- The earliest fill date for a Class III or IV medication cannot be further than 6 months in advance.
- Clinicians are required to acknowledge their responsibility in the final review screen individually for each controlled substance that has been added to the Scratchpad.
- When prescribing Class III, IV, or V medications that have been approved for detoxification (for example, Suboxone), a NADEAN number is required. If a prescriber does not have a NADEAN number defined within OrderConnect, they are not allowed to ePrescribe these medications.
- When prescribing XYREM, a reason is required. The reason is entered in the Notes to Pharmacy field.
- A prescription must be validated by a physician using two-factor authentication prior to transmission to a pharmacy. This includes medications that are ordered within an inpatient setting but sent to an external pharmacy. Physicians need to be provided with off-hour connectivity in order to support urgent medication requests.
Refer to the following lists of sample medications for each class that can be used for validation or testing.
