About placing orders for Home Medications

The following sections detail the behavior that users and system administrators should expect when placing new prescriptions or client-reported medications on the Home Medications tab.

When placing orders for new prescriptions or client-reported medications on the Home Medications tab, you should expect certain behavior

Order search

On the Home Medications tab, the system searches the OrderConnect order catalog.

When searching for a medication name in the New Order search field, the system displays the top 10 commonly prescribed medications for that user that match the search terms, along with all additional matching results. The top prescribed medications list the medication name, strength, form, and route with the addition of the dose form frequency in parentheses. Select one of these records to populate the order details with the associated information.

Taper/Titration

On the Home Medications tab you can elect to do a taper or titration for an order on the fly rather than a single dose. Select Taper/Titrate then define a series of taper or titration steps.

After adding the series of taper/titration steps to the Scratchpad, you see individual orders with varying offsets.

Note: The individual taper/titration steps are not managed together. Changing the details in one order or deleting an order does not automatically update or change the details of the other taper/titration steps. Additional instructions are added to each order indicating which step of the taper/titration it is.

Missing required fields

When placing an order, required order details are identified by red text. After an order is added to the Scratchpad, the system checks for any missing required fields. If any details exist, there is a red flag indicator next to orders that are missing the required fields. Select the red flag indicator to see a list of missing required fields.

Interaction alerts

In the Order Entry Console, passive alerts appear during the ordering process. Alert icons display with the order details and in the Scratchpad. At any point, you can select the alert icon, review the alert, and resolve the issue.

Selecting the individual alert icons only shows the alerts for that specific order. Upon signing, all unresolved alerts are shown to you for resolution. You must address all alerts prior to signing. The Save Override and Exit button is not available until all alerts have been addressed.

Note: Not all alerts available in OrdeConnect are displayed within the Order Entry Console. Specifically, black box warnings, prescribing guidelines, and non-severity alerts such as lactation warnings are not shown when ordering on the Home Medications tab. The system does comply with all meaningful use requirements for drug-drug (including duplicate therapies) and drug-allergy warnings.

Update an order from the Scratchpad

When you select an order from the Scratchpad, the details automatically populate in the order details section for editing. Select Update Order to commit the changes to the Scratchpad, or choose Cancel Update to cancel or clear the edits without committing changes to the Scratchpad.
