Change Ordering Practitioner

Use the Change Ordering Practitioner form or the Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders) form to update the ordering practitioner for new orders that are awaiting validation. This update feature is helpful in situations such as a staff member entering the wrong practitioner at the time of order entry. Instead of discontinuing orders and them placing new orders with the correct practitioner, the user can simply update the ordering practitioner.

Setup

For the Order Types (500) data element, the 'Allow Change Ordering Practitioner' extended attribute must be set to 'Yes' for the order type of the order.

Set the registry settings 'Practitioner attrib. to check if allowed' and 'Practitioner attrib. values for allowed' to no value.
Note: Instead of setting these registry settings to no value, they can be configured so that the practitioner is an ordering/changing/reviewing practitioner.

The Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders) and Change Ordering Practitioner forms function the same, except the Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders) form will only allow orders to be changed by the logged in user who created them. 

Nurses and other users entering orders in the system will be given access to the Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders) form, and HIM users will be given access to the Change Ordering Practitioner form to be able to change the ordering practitioner on any orders awaiting validation.

Note: It is a best practice to give a user access to only the Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders) form or the Change Ordering Practitioner form.

  1. Select a practitioner.
    A list displays with all patients that have an active order with the selected practitioner as the ordering physician. 
  2. Select a patient and click Select Orders.
    A list displays with all the patient's active, unvalidated orders that have the selected practitioner as the ordering practitioner. This list contains the following information.
    • Order Number
    • Order Name
    • Start Date
    • End Date
  3. Select the orders where the ordering practitioner needs to be changed.
  4. Select another physician to be the ordering physician.
  5. Click Save. When the form is filed it will switch the ordering practitioner, delete the to-do item for validating the order(s) for the previous practitioner, and create a new to-do for validating the order(s) for the new practitioner.

Change Order Practitioner Forms

This form allows a user to change the Ordering Practitioner assigned to an order created in myAvatar either through 'Client Profile / Physicians Orders' or through the Order Entry Console (Orders This Episode) tab.

For an order to be eligible for this change it:

  • Can not part of External Pharmacy
  • Must be in a "Requires Validation" status
  • Must be associated to an Order Type where the "Allow Change Ordering Practitioner" attribute is set to "Yes"

Change Ordering Practitioner

This form allows a user to search for a Staff Member. Upon selecting the Staff Member a list of patients will be generated who have orders pending validation where the selected Staff Member is currently the Ordering Practitioner. In this form it does not matter who originally entered the order.

Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders)

This form allows the user to search for a Staff Member and see which orders that were created by the logged in user for the staff member selected.

This update adds two new forms:

  • Change Ordering Practitioner
  • Change Ordering Practitioner (My Orders)

A new Extended Attribute 'Allow Change Ordering Practitioner' is added to the (500) Order Types dictionary. This must be set to "Yes" to allow the Order Type to be eligible.

Workflow

  1. Open either version of the form.
  2. Select the "Current Ordering Practitioner" that has orders you wish to update.
  3. Select any orders that are to be modified using the "Select Orders" button.
  4. Search for and select the "New Ordering Practitioner" that the orders will be changed to.
  5. Click the "File Changes" button to update the orders.
