Gender Identity - Cal-PM SOGI Enhancements
As part of the SOGI Enhancements, the California User Group (CAUG) requested the ability to capture an individual’s Gender Identity that was separate from data currently captured within either the Sex or Sexual Orientation field.
Fields to capture Gender Identity and Gender Identity (Please Describe) have been added to the following forms:
- Update Client Data
- Admission > Demographics
- Admission (Outpatient) > Demographics
- Discharge > Demographics
- Discharge (Outpatient) > Demographics
- Pre Admit > Demographics
- Pre Admit Discharge > Demographics
Enhancements
A new field to capture Gender Identity has been added as an optional, single-select field. The dictionary codes and values are populated with the USCDI V2 standards.

A corresponding free text field has been added to capture Gender Identity (Please Describe). This field is enabled and required if the user selects Additional gender category or other, please specify in the Gender Identity field.
Client Header
In Client Lookup/Header Configuration Manager, Gender Identity has been added as a field option to be added to the Client Header:
After Gender Identity is added, the current selection in this field in client demographics displays. If 'Additional gender category or other, please specify' is selected in the Gender Identity field, the information in the free text field Gender Identity (Please Describe) displays:
Please note that RADplus 2022 Update 134 is required for the Gender Identity information to display within the Client Header.
Table Updates
The SYSTEM.view_episode_summary_admit, SYTEM.view_episode_summary_current, SYSTEM.view_episode_summary_discharge, SYSTEM.patient_current_demographics and SYSTEM.patient_demographic_history have been updated with the following columns:
- gender_identity_code
- gender_identity_other
- gender_identity_value
Conversion
After installing Avatar Cal-PM 2022 Update 80, existing demographic data is converted. The purpose of this conversion is to leverage existing information to pre-populate the Gender Identity field rather than introduce a blank field to client demographics. The conversion logic is as follows:
