Document MAR medications

Path: Patient>Clinical>MAR

Prerequisite: You need to have a special operator's privilege for documenting MAR and separate for documenting deactivated MARs. MAR cannot be documented after the patient's discharge date.

  1. Go to Patient>Clinical>MAR.
  2. Select the MAR to document and ensure that you are in the Document mode. If the mode button reads 'View' instead of 'Document', this means either you do not have privileges to document MAR or there is no MAR available for documenting.
  3. Proceed with the directions below for regular or PRN medications:
    1. Regular
      1. In the Scheduled orders section, double-click the cell with a box in it for the appropriate date and medication. Depending on your Business Unit settings, you are allowed to document regular MAR medications only within a specific period relative to the MAR scheduled time (see Medication Administration Variance).

      2. In the New/Edit Entry Window, specify the medication as 'Given' or 'Not Given'.

      3. Enter the actual date and time of administering the medication.

      4. If the medication is not given, specify the reason in the text field at the bottom of the dialog.

    2. PRN

      1. Double-click any empty cell in the PRN section for the appropriate medication. PRN medications cannot be documented for future.

      2. In the New/Edit PRN Entry window, specify the date, time, and route of administering the medication.

      3. (Optional) Specify the site if needed.

      4. Specify the reason of administering the PRN medication.

      5. (Optional) Specify the response for the PRN medication. The response can be captured later by the same or another physician (see Editing Existing MAR).

  4. Click OK, and then save your changes.

For regular medications, the initials of the clinician administering the medication and the selected check box appear in the appropriate cell in the MAR Grid for the date and time you selected.

For PRN medications, records are marked with the yellow note icon and administered time. Unlike regular medications, PRN medications are not displayed in the cells with the appropriate time. They are just added one by one in the available cells with the administered time indicated.
